How to Track Sports Bets: A Simple System That Actually Works

If you're not tracking your bets, you don't actually know if you're a winning bettor — you have a feeling, and feelings lie. Here's a simple, complete system for tracking sports bets, plus the automated path if manual logging isn't sticking.

Why tracking is non-negotiable

Memory is selective. You'll remember the parlay that hit and forget the four that didn't. A bet log strips the story out and gives you the numbers: ROI by sport, by market, by book, by day of week. Without it, you can't improve — you're just guessing about your own game.

The minimum fields every bet log needs

  • Date — when the bet was placed (not when it graded)
  • Sport & league — NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAAF, UFC, etc.
  • Market — spread, moneyline, total, player prop, futures
  • Selection — what you actually bet
  • Book / sportsbook — DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, etc.
  • Odds at placement — American, decimal, or fractional (pick one and stick with it)
  • Stake — in dollars AND in units
  • Closing line — the line when the market closed (this is how you measure CLV)
  • Result — win, loss, push, void
  • Profit/loss — auto-calculated from odds, stake, and result
  • Tags / system — which strategy or angle produced this bet

The spreadsheet starter template

A basic Google Sheet with the columns above will get you 80% of the way there. Add a running bankroll column that's =previousBankroll + P/L, and a unit-size column that's =bankroll * 0.02. Congratulations — you now have what most bettors never build.
